How David Wheldon OBE left their lane.
David Wheldon moved from some of advertising’s best-known agencies into global brand leadership – then crossed between both worlds for more than four decades.
David Wheldon learned advertising on the agency side.
He joined Saatchi & Saatchi as a graduate trainee in 1983, before becoming Managing Partner at WCRS and Managing Director of Lowe Howard-Spink. It was an education in making the argument – understanding the brief, defending the idea and persuading a client that the work deserved to exist.
Then he crossed the table.
Wheldon moved to Atlanta as Global Director and Vice-President of Advertising at The Coca-Cola Company. Suddenly the questions extended beyond whether the advertising was good. The brand, the budgets, the organisation and the consequences of the decision belonged to his side of the room.
It would not be the last time he moved between the two.
He returned agency-side as President of BBDO Europe, then became a main-board director and CEO of Tempus Partners. When WPP acquired the business, Wheldon established Team Vodafone for the group – before joining Vodafone itself in 2004, first as Global Director of Brand and Marketing Communications and then as Global Brand Director.
The moves gave him an unusually complete view of the relationship between brands and the businesses built to serve them.
At Barclays, he became Managing Director of Brand, Reputation and Citizenship. In 2015, he joined RBS as Chief Marketing Officer and became part of the executive team tasked with rebuilding the bank after the financial crisis. He helped lead the shift from RBS Banking Group to NatWest Group, alongside work to rebuild both business performance and public trust. He left in 2020.
By then, his influence had extended beyond any individual brand.
Wheldon served his first term as President of the World Federation of Advertisers from 2015 to 2019. During that period, he was involved in industry efforts around responsible media and brand safety, including the work that led to the Global Alliance for Responsible Media. He was subsequently named WFA President Emeritus and has hosted its Better Marketing podcast since 2020.
In 2025, he briefly returned to full-time brand leadership as Chief Global Brand Officer at Allwyn, helping establish its global brand platform. The same year, he was elected WFA President for a second time – a role he continues to hold in 2026.
He was appointed OBE for services to advertising and marketing.
Wheldon has spent his career on both sides of advertising’s most familiar divide.
The result is less a view from either side of the table than an understanding of why the table is there at all.
