Niamh White MBE

A curator who left the art world’s coveted rooms to transform spaces it had largely overlooked.

Through Hospital Rooms, Niamh White has spent a decade bringing leading artists into mental health settings – making the case that environment, dignity and care belong in the same conversation.

Niamh White began her career in the contemporary art world, working at Hauser & Wirth and SHOWstudio. It was a route that could have led naturally towards galleries, exhibitions and collections.

Instead, one experience redirected it.

In 2016, her partner, artist Tim A Shaw, visited a friend receiving treatment in an NHS mental health unit. Together, they began questioning why people spending time in clinical settings should have less access to beauty, imagination and creative experience precisely when those things might matter most.

Hospital Rooms grew from that question.

White and Shaw began bringing artists, patients and staff together to transform mental health spaces collaboratively. Artists including Sonia Boyce, Julian Opie and Anish Kapoor have since contributed.

But the idea is bigger than the art on the walls. White’s argument is that a space can communicate dignity, possibility and care. And that culture should not become less available simply because somebody has entered a clinical setting.
