HOW DC THOMSON LEFT ITS LANE

Founded in Dundee in 1905, DC Thomson has built its future by helping people understand the forces shaping theirs.

From local newspapers serving communities across Scotland to global digital brands, the company has repeatedly expanded beyond the categories people expected it to occupy, often finding opportunity where different worlds overlap. From journalism and storytelling to data, insight, technology and community-building, DC Thomson has built a business around understanding how people adapt to change.

Today, that belief is expressed through a diverse portfolio of businesses and communities. Its local news brands help people make sense of the forces shaping the places they live. Beano Brain brings the perspectives of children and young people into crucial conversations.

Its history businesses, including Findmypast and The Social History Archive, preserve and interpret the stories that help people understand where they have come from and where they are heading, whilst E-FWD connects decision-makers across the energy sector as they navigate one of the most significant transitions of our time.

The businesses look very different. The thread between them is less so: understanding what people care about, finding new ways to reach them and refusing to assume that yesterday’s format has to be tomorrow’s.

DC Thomson never stopped being a publisher. It just kept expanding what publishing could lead to.
