AI is set to transform the future of health, taking us to a place we will better be able to predict and prevent disease, and when it does still strike, personalise treatment. It’s not about living to wild old ages, but living better for longer, closing the gap on healthspan and lifespan. Technology has the power to do this.
How Lara Lewington left their lane.
Lara Lewington started in weather, followed an early fascination with technology and built a career explaining what comes next.
Lara Lewington’s route into technology started with a few gadget reviews on the Five News sofa.
She had joined Channel 5 in 2003 as its daily weather presenter and showbiz reporter. But alongside the forecasts and interviews, the channel began giving her technology segments. Lewington realised that was the direction she wanted to go in.
In 2011, she joined the BBC’s Click as a reporter. Seven years later she became a co-presenter, travelling the world to investigate the technologies beginning to reshape everyday life – from artificial intelligence and robotics to digital health. She remained with the programme until its final edition in 2025.
What began as a specialism increasingly became the mainstream.
Lewington went on to front Panorama: Beyond Human – Artificial Intelligence and Us, present programmes on health technology for ITV’s Tonight and BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, and become Lorraine’s resident “AI Agony Aunt” – translating a fast-moving field for audiences who do not spend their lives inside it.
That same instinct sits behind her 2025 book, Hacking Humanity. Its focus is not technology for technology’s sake, but what AI, data and emerging science could mean for how we understand our bodies, prevent illness and live healthier lives.
Lewington followed technology before it became everybody’s story.
Now much of her work is about making sure the rest of us can follow it too.
