Temporary clinics could treat people who reached them, but they could not solve the problem of identifying millions more living with avoidable sight loss. Specialist equipment and trained clinicians were scarce. Mobile phones were not.
Bastawrous realised the answer was not simply to become a faster surgeon.
Peek Vision grew from that shift in perspective.
Its technology enables trained community workers to carry out vision screening and helps health systems identify who needs treatment, refer them and follow whether they actually receive care.
The innovation is not simply the tool. It is redesigning the route through the system.
Bastawrous moved further away from the operating theatre in order to bring eye care within reach of more people.
